JAVANESE NOODLES / MEE JAWA

Tired & bored with gutinous rice & white rice
Let us have Javanese Noodles..

Dah penat makan pulut...
Dah jemu makan nasi...
Jom kita layan Mee Jawa pulak ya...
The  soupy gravy is made of fresh prawns.. The thickness come from d sweet potato.. d tangy  is from  d tomato paste and last but not least, it wouldn't be called Malaysian food without d spicy, pop from chilli paste.

This Malaysian delicacies is an Indonesian style noodle i.e. another popular Malay noodle influenced by the Indonesian Island of Java. It is also very popular among the Singaporean.

Bak kata Phua Chu Kang... popular in JB & Singapore

What is Javanese Noodles?
It is yellow noodles drenched with a thick sweet & spicy potato-based gravy and garnished with a hard-boiled egg, spring onions, bean sprouts, fried shallots, crunchy fritters, potato and lime juice.

As usual, my Sifu of this recipe is my late Mother-in-Law. When I was first introduced to this menu, I was quite surprised, as it is relatively easy to prepare compared to the unforgetfull taste.

Javanese Noodle / Mee Jawa Recipe

Ingredients:
 1kg Yellow noodles
10 prawns (de-shelled) - Boiled, blend & sifted d shells
3 sweet potatos - boiled & mashed
5 tbs curry powder
1-2 tbs chilli powder
4 tbs tomato ketchup
Salt & Sugar to taste
5 cups water

Garnish:
Hard boiled eggs - halves
Potato - boiled & quartered
Fried beancurd- sliced thin
Handful bean sprouts - blanched in hot water
Spring Onion
Green & Red Chilli
Fresh lime

Method:
1. Boil potato till soft and blend with 2 cup of water to create a mashed potato - to thicken d gravy.
2. De-shelled prawns.
Set aside d prawn flesh.
3. Boil d shells with 2 cups of water. Sifted d shells & blend them with 1 cup of water. D prawn shell soup will be used to make d gravy.
4. Combined d prawn shell soup & d mashed potato in a large pot.
5. Combined tomato ketchup, curry powder & chilli powder to form a paste. Put into d gravy soup.
6. Boil d gravy soup to desired thickness.
7. Add salt & sugar to taste. I love to use brown sugar, as it will gives colour to d gravy.
8. Garnish d noodles & serves hot
etcetera:
1. Crunchy Fritters - Sliced half of d prawns flesh. Mix well with 1 cup of flour & 1 cup water. Fry the batter thinly so to make crunchy fritters. Break d fritters on top of your noodles.

2. Dried shrimps powder - You may also sprinkle dried shrimps powder for a luxurious taste.
Bon Appetite..
